ASA 104 - Bareboat Chartering

ASA 103 / 104 Combo
This combination course is for those graduates of the ASA 101 course. It is currently a 4 day class usually conducted during the week. The material covered in a short 4 days is considerable. We generally spend one night on the hook and the other two at marinas.

ASA Fast Track
The ASA Fast Track course combines all the material from the ASA 101, ASA 103 and ASA 104 courses to get you well prepared for sailing. The sailing school begins on Monday morning, (0900), at our classroom. In order to get the most value from this intense class you should have had some previous training or experience. Its not uncommon to have an ASA 101 graduate participate in this class. The class is currently a five day live aboard class and the daily schedule is intense. As with all classes we start at 0900 but its not uncommon to work on reviews in the evening until 2000 (8:00 PM), or later. An average class will spend 3 nights in various marinas and one night on the hook. The first day is spent on our 25' Catalina, (Training Won), learning good basic sailing skills. You will berth on another boat, (Margaritaville). The second day starts with reviews and navigation exercises. After provisioning our boat, we shove off on a route layed out by a student for our first destination. We lecture and test every evening, and learn and practise sailing and navigational skills everyday. On morning of the 5th day all written testing has been completed. The students review; engine fuel systems, AC systems, Fresh Water Systems etc. We shove off by 1100 and once again sail a segmented course layed out by all the students, communicating with commercial vessels with radio and sound. We then venture into a part of the bay where if we do not follow a good course we will pass extremely close to several submerged wrecks. The class returns around 1600 on Friday. You'll be tired, very tired!

Curious?A typical GPS track of a liveaboard class is available here. It in a PDF format. This particular class departs Corpus Christi Municipal Marina and heads for a two night stay in Key Allegro Marina in Rockport. After practise sessions in Corpus Christi Bay and Aransas Bay, the class again navigates a route to Port Aransas. Prior to arriving in Port A we detour into the Gulf of Mexico for additional training. The class has an overnight in Port A. In the morning another route is charted back to Corpus Christi, the fuel is topped off, then we head back for a bitter sweet arrival in CC The total distance sailed is about 100 nm.

ASA 114 - Cruising Catamaran
Prerequisites: Basic Keelboat ASA 101 and Basic Coastal Cruising ASA 103. The Bareboat Charter Standard ASA 104 is also a prerequisite and can be attained either by itself prior to BBC Multihull ASA 114 or in conjunction with BBC Multihull ASA 114. In either case, ALL MATERIAL IN BOTH STANDARDS, ASA 104 & 114, MUST BE TAUGHT AND TESTED BEFORE the ASA 114 CAN BE AWARDED.
General Description: An advanced cruising standard for individuals with cruising experience. The individual can act as skipper and crew of a 30-50 foot multihull sailboat by day in coastal waters. The standard includes those skills unique to a 30-50 foot multihull.

ASA 105 - Coastal Navigation
Prerequisites: None
General Description: Able to demonstrate the navigational theory required to safely navigate a sailing vessel in coastal or inland waters. There is no Sailing Skills part to this standard and practical application of this sailing knowledge is found in the Advanced Coastal Cruising Standard. This is a difficult standard and it is presented as a self study class. The majoriy of students need a little help with the material. If you are a pilot, (aviator), and can still navigate the old fashioned way, it will not be to difficult. However, for the rest of you...consider taking the class after you have completed the self study DVD.

ASA RADAR Endorsement
This course is offered to both sailors and powerboaters.
Prerequisites: Basic Keelboat, Basic Coastal Cruising, Coastal Navigation. Power boaters need to demonstrate a sufficient experience level in coastal navigation.
General Description: The ASA radar course teaches safe, efficient use of small-craft radar for piloting, chart navigation, and collision avoidance, including radar principles and practical matters of radar operation. A realistic PC based radar simulator is used in the course to illustrate radar measurements.
