$400m of Cryptocurrency Hacked By North Korean Hackers in 2021 || Biggest Cryptocurrency Hacking

North Korean hackers launched at least seven attacks on cryptocurrency platforms last year to steal almost $400 million worth of digital assets, according to a report by blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis.

“From 2020 to 2021, the number of North Korean-linked hacks jumped from four to seven, and the value extracted from these hacks grew by 40%,” the report said.

The attacks primarily targeted investment firms and centralized exchanges.

The report stated that the hackers siphoned the funds from the organizations’ internet-connected “hot wallets” into DPRK-controlled addresses by using complex tactics, including phishing lures, code exploits, malware and advanced social engineering.

“Once North Korea gained custody of the funds, they began a careful laundering process to cover up and cash out,” the report said.

In 2021, Ethereum and Bitcoin accounted for 58% and 20% of the funds, respectively; 22% came from ERC-20 tokens or altcoins.

The report also said, citing the United Nations Security Council, North Korea used the money by hacks to support its weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and ballistic missile-related programs.

US blames North Korean hacker group for $625 million Axie Infinity theft – The Verge

Who Are The North Korean Hackers Behind The $625 Million Crypto Theft? | Forbes

The U.S. Treasury Department has linked North Korean hacking group Lazarus to the recent theft of $625 million worth of cryptocurrency from the Ronin Network, an Ethereum-compatible blockchain tailored for the popular play-to-earn game Axie Infinity.

The hackers infiltrated the network last month, stealing about 173,600 ether, according to the Ronin Network, and 25.5 million USDC (a digital asset pegged to the value of the U.S. dollar and available on multiple blockchains including Ethereum and Solana). Blockchain analytics firm Elliptic says the group has managed to launder 18% of the stolen funds and continues to do so via Tornado Cash, a service that allows users to obfuscate their digital trails.

So what do we know about the culprits?

The Lazarus cyber collective has operated for more than 10 years with the North Korean government’s blessing, gaining notoriety for its attack on Sony Pictures in 2014 and an $81 million heist on the Central Bank of Bangladesh.

A previous version of this video did not include Ronin’s response to the hack. Additionally, their fundraising round post-hack including funding from Binance. Binance plans to make a major investment in the parent company that will own Forbes following Forbes’ previously-announced public listing transaction.

North Korean Hackers Stole $400 Million In Crypto Last Year │ This Is How They Stole Axie Infinity

The United States has seized over $30 million in cryptocurrency stolen by North Korean-linked hackers Lazarus from the popular online game Axie Infinity, crypto intelligence firm Chainalysis said on Thursday.

The company said in a blog post it played a role in the recovery with U.S. law enforcement and other crypto organizations, without naming them, in the first ever recovery of stolen cryptocurrency by a North Korea hacking group.

Chainalysis and North Korea’s mission to the United Nations did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The FBI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The seizures represent about 10% of the total funds stolen in March from Ronin Network, a sidechain built for the play-to-earn game Axie Infinity, Chainalysis said.
